The world opens up to dealcoholized wines

Consumers are increasingly opting for an alcohol-free lifestyle. This trend opens up new opportunities for those bulk wines that know how to adapt to this.

We will examine the main factors in order to understand what it means to create and develop a dealcoholized wine brand, alongside world-renowned experts on the subject.

Technical specifications, legal requirements, terminology, trade adjustments, distribution, marketing, sales to an end consumer, trends and communication… Understanding dealcoholized wines is key to assessing their commercial viability.

Fernando Zamora Martín

FERNANDO ZAMORA MARTÍN

Currently, he holds the positions of Director of Experimental Winery at the Rovira i Virgili University and President of the Commission of Oenology of the International Organisation of Vine and Wine (OIV). He has advised on eighteen doctoral theses; and he has published 95 scientific articles in peer-reviewed journals, over 150 articles in other sorts of journals, numerous book chapters, and has delivered several papers at international congresses.

He works as an oenologist consultant for wineries in several PDO areas: Priorat (Roquers de Porrera), Montsant (Cal Bessó), Ribera de Duero (Pagos d’Anguix) and Cava (Juvé & Camps). He is also the co-owner of the renowned wine “Espectacle del Montsant”.

Jean Louis Escudier

JEAN LOUIS ESCUDIER

Jean-Louis Escudier has been a research fellow at the INRAE Pech-Rouge, an institution that he has directed for three mandates. He has received the “Laurier Ingénieur” (Engineer Award) for his works on oenology, as well as technology linked to wine quality improvement, diversification of productions (non-alcoholic wines) and input reduction in winemaking and oenology.

After having been a member of several scientific boards, he was an OIV oenology expert for France up until the end of 2021. And in March 2022, he published a book, From Winemaking to Viticulture, together with Alain Carbonneau at QUAE Editions, in which he shares his scientific knowledge and expertise for a well-informed general audience (link: De l’œnologie à la viticulture), which they have now reedited and added numerous hot topics: new generations of grape varieties, including those resistant to fungal diseases, diversity of wine categories and their charts, non-alcoholic wine and juice, diversification of productions, and current discussions within a framework of climate and social development.

IREM EREN

Irem was raised in Istanbul and spent years studying and working abroad in the UK, Spain, Turkey, Germany, and the United States. Due to her vast international experience, Irem speaks multiple languages including Spanish, English, Turkish. Irem holds a degree in Chemistry from Istanbul Polytechnical University, a Master’s degree in International Business and Marketing from Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, and is a WSET Diploma Holder.

In 2019, Irem became a WeinAkademiker after writing her thesis on the impacts of Big Data in the Wine Industry and is currently completing the Master of Wine program. Irem held the positions of Marketing Manager and Wine Buyer with AYZA NYC based in New York and Senior Global Brand Manager with Torres Family based in Barcelona. Irem also worked for several years as a winemaker in Spain, Cavas Torello, and teaches WSET Level 3 courses in Barcelona. Irem joined BevZero as Business Development and Sales Director, EMEA in 2021.

Gianmaria Zanella

GIANMARIA ZANELLA

He studied Oenology in the University of Verona, where he graduated in 2008. Just after that, he spent two years as a research fellow at the University of Verona. Gianmaria started to work as a freelance oenologist and, in 2012, joined the Enological Vason team. Currently, he is in charge of the R&D Oenology department of Enological Vason.

Gerard Higgins

GERARD HIGGINS 

Gerard Higgins is a sommelier and wine consultant based in Stockholm, Sweden. Born and raised in Australia’s famed Hunter Valley, in an eleven-generation family history in the wine industry, he is well placed for a role as Senior Wine Specialist within Pernod Ricard Winemakers EMEA Business Acceleration team.

Prior to this position, Gerard spent a decade honing his tasting skills working as a sommelier at some of Sydney’s best Michelin-level, wine-focused restaurants before moving to Sweden with Pernod Ricard in early 2017. In his current job, he is responsible for brand education and corporate relations across the Northern European region, as well as responsibility for liquid optimisation within the Nordic Monopoly markets.

Gerard holds his WSET diploma in Wines and Spirits and is a current Stage 2 candidate with the Institute of Masters of Wine.

DEALCOHOLIZED-WINE TASTING SESSION

The masterclass on dealcoholized wines will conclude with a tasting session run by Jean Louis Escudier. We will have the opportunity to taste some of the most outstanding references of this type of wine.

The future of dealcoholized wines and the opportunities for bulk wine will be topics for discussion at the WBWE.
