If you are looking for a red wine that is a one-trick pony, don’t come knocking on the door of South African Merlot. The second Hallo Merlot Top 10 competition, this year sponsored by esteemed French cooperage Taransaud, attracted 69 entries from most of the Cape’s wine regions. And in their quest to find the 20 finalists ahead of the Top 10 announcement on 21 June, judges were unanimous that this year’s entries provided a more dynamic spread of Merlot offerings than in the previous competition.

A particularly strong line up made for a hugely exciting National Wine Challenge this year. Organisers, stakeholders and judges were all well-pleased both with traction as well as wine quality. Winning wines faced tough challenges and they had to fight hard, given the generally high wine quality and overall a more sophisticated line up than previously. South Africa stars in the 2023 Intercontinental Spirits Challenge

The Africa leg of the global Intercontinental Spirits Challenge was held in Stellenbosch on the 24th and 25th of May 2023. The 24th was a screening tasting for the most prominent category: Gin, followed by a tasting of all the products on the 25th. With a focus on evaluating and celebrating outstanding beverages, the panellists had to assess entries from six countries, showcasing exceptional quality.
