Meerendal Wine Estate in Durbanville will be hosting an Art auction at their new tasting room on Monday 18 March 2024 and show case some of its famous wines to art lovers.
Some of the outstanding paintings by well-known artist Anton Gericke from Pretoria has been on display at the tasting room since it opened in September 2023. Fifteen of his collection of paintings will be auctioned. The event will start at 18:00 with a taste of the Meerendal estate wines and a light snack. The Auction will commence at 18:45. A young up and coming artist from Durbanville, Leonardo Pool, has also been invited to participate in the auction.
Anton started doing sketches from the tender age of six. When he turned eight, he received a gift of oil paints. However, he had to teach himself how to use them effectively. Undeterred by the lack of guidance, he persevered honing his skills through trial and error.
Despite his successful career as a pharmacist, Anton always found solace and fulfilment in his music and painting. Eventually, he made the decision to sell his pharmacies and fully embrace his true calling as a professional artist.
Anton has been painting with oils for most of his life of 69 years and more recently also acrylic. He says that the quality of acrylic has become so high and he finds it less messy and easy to keep brushes clean too. “ I do often go over the acrylic with oils for a smoother finishing touch. The small paintings are mostly acrylic on board and the larger paintings would be acrylic and oil on canvas”, Anton says.
Renaldo Pool is a full-time medical laboratory scientist, and his interest in watercolour painting started during the Covid-2021 lockdown period.
By day, he analyses biological specimens and during his free-time, he immerses himself in the world of watercolours – capturing his rendition of nature scenes, through the blending of vibrant hues and delicate, detailed brush strokes. Between the precision of science and the freedom of expression through art, it is essential for me to cultivate a balanced life where these two aspects, in a way, complement each other. Renaldo will present three of his works.
