The prestigious Nedbank Cape Winemakers Guild (CWG) Auction, to be held on Friday 30 September and Saturday 1 October 2022, will be hosted by Strauss & Co, South Africa’s leading art and wine auction house.
The Virtual Live Auction will be held at the Lord Charles Hotel in Somerset West and will take place over two days, Friday evening and Saturday during the day.
All the wines that will be going under the hammer will be offered on both days. Guests will have the opportunity to attend and bid live in the auction hall or Virtually Live from anywhere in the world. Being a Virtual Live auction, online, telephonic and commission bidding will also be available. Those wishing to bid will be able to register online with Strauss & Co from Monday, 12 September 2022.

The Nedbank Cape Winemakers Guild Auction will take place on Friday 30 September and Saturday 1 October 2022.
The line-up of wines will be announced at the beginning of August and these can be tasted informally at the two showcase tastings to be held ahead of the auction. The Cape Town showcase will be held at the Cape Town International Convention Centre on Thursday 25 August 2022 and the Johannesburg showcase a week later on Wednesday 31 August 2022 at The Galleria in Sandton.
In a farewell footnote, talented winemaker Chris Alheit has opted to resign from the CWG for personal reasons, his main motivation being to cut back on non-essential commitments in order to spend more quality time with his young family. He leaves under entirely amicable circumstances and will be sorely missed by his fellow guild members.

It’s been an unprecedented two years for wine auctions, but the Nedbank Cape Winemakers Guild Auction returns live and online on 2 October 2021, preceded by a compelling two-week online charity auction offering rare and unique wine collections to raise funds for the Guild’s Protégé Programme.
There will be two separate and distinct auctions this year, and both will be hosted by international auction house Bonhams. The auction excitement commences with the Protégé Programme Auction that opens on Friday, 17 September and closes on Monday, 4 October 2021.
The Protégé Programme Auction held earlier this year introduced the theme and hashtag #BuyForTheFuture, paving the way for the Guild’s second Charity Auction this October to raise much-needed funds to ensure that the Protégé Programme can continue its cause.
By participating in this Auction, bidders will contribute towards a programme that nurtures young talent and enriches the lives of individuals who ordinarily would not have had the opportunity. Buyers will also be supporting the future of the South African wine industry.
CWG chair Andrea Mullineux says, “Working together towards excellence and uplifting not only our fellow members, but those who want to prosper within the wine industry today and into the future. This is the ethos that defines the Cape Winemakers Guild.”
The 2021 Nedbank CWG Auction will be hosted live and online at 11:00 am (SA time) on Saturday 2 October 2021 by international Auction house Bonhams, (10:00 am London time). All wines are tasted blind and selected by specialist panels of Guild members to ensure that only wines of excellence are offered on the Auction.
More about the Cape Winemakers Guild
Established in 1982, the CWG is a collective of 42 of South Africa’s greatest winemakers. Membership is by invitation only and is extended to winemakers who have been responsible for the production of outstanding wines for a minimum of five years and who show promise of not only consistently exceeding industry standards but also promoting the values of the Guild. The members produce rare and unique wines in small quantities exclusively for their annual auction, showcasing wines of excellence from South Africa.
