An afternoon at Spier

Sprawling vineyards, historic Cape Dutch architecture, award-winning wine and beautifully dramatic mountain backdrop – Spier Wine Farm has everything needed for a great day out in the Cape Winelands.

Located a 45-minute drive from Cape Town, Spier is en route to the quaint town of Stellenbosch, and is a popular stop for tourists and locals alike.

Spier is home to a range of world-renowned wines so during a visit, a wine tasting is a definite must-do.

Wine enthusiasts can look forward to esteemed wines and innovative food pairings while enjoying a wine tasting at Spier. Perched on the edge of the Spier Dam, the Tasting Room offers visitors stunning views of the surrounding Helderberg Mountains from the sun drenched stoep. Inside, a unique Heath Nash chandelier glints above the tasting area; 334 recycled Spier wine bottles make up the striking focal piece.

Visitors can enjoy a choice of tasting options to please any palate. Options include the Spier Tasting comprised of wines from the signature range, and premium 21 Gables and Creative Block ranges, wine and chocolate pairings, as well as a select tasting of Spier’s flagship Frans K Smit Wine. Kids are welcomed wholeheartedly too with a Children’s Grape Juice Tasting on offer! Cheese and charcuterie boards are available.

Spier has a history dating back to 1692 making it one of South Africa’s oldest wine farms. Today, Spier is a modern wine farm with a passion for art, conservation, and sustainability and aims to have a positive effect on the community and environment.

Evidence of this passion is found across the wine farm from the vineyards to the restaurants serving farm to table-style, locally produced food.

After indulging in some of Spier’s award-winning vintages, there are an array of activities to keep you entertained. Take a Segway tour of the vineyards, embark on a heritage walk of the grounds, dine at one of the onsite restaurants, enjoy a picnic, appreciate the art, or witness an intriguing eagle encounter.

There is no shortage of things to see and do at Spier. Head through for an afternoon full of fantastic wine, delicious food and stunning views.
